Sun Te Kong Temple

Sun Te Kong Temple is one of the oldest and most historic temples in Tanjungpinang City. Located in the coastal area of Senggarang, this temple dates back to the 18th century and remains an active place of worship for the local Chinese community. More than just a place of prayer, Sun Te Kong is a living testament to the acculturation of Chinese and Malay cultures in Bintan.

The temple building features classic Chinese architecture with curved roofs, dominant red and gold colors, and carvings of dragons and deity statues. What makes it special is the presence of old banyan trees whose roots intertwine with parts of the temple structure—adding a mystical aura and a visually captivating element for photographers and visitors.

Although not very large, the atmosphere inside the temple feels solemn and peaceful. Locals often come to pray, bringing incense and offerings while reciting prayers before the main altar. Visitors are allowed to enter while respecting the rules of the place of worship, such as speaking softly and dressing modestly.

Sun Te Kong Temple is often part of cultural and spiritual pilgrimage routes in Tanjungpinang, but it also attracts general tourists who wish to gain a closer understanding of the religious life of the coastal Chinese community. During major holidays like Chinese New Year and Cap Go Meh, the temple becomes a hub of celebrations and attracts many visitors.

Access to the temple can be made via a short sea journey by pompong from Tanjungpinang city center to Senggarang, or by land route, which is now better connected. The location is within walking distance from Senggarang pier.
